Pediatric sedation dentistry in Gilbert, AZ is used in several circumstances. Very young kids are often not able to sit still for the duration of the dental procedure. Children’s sedation makes the process less stressful for all involved and reduces the risk of injury. In addition, some youngsters struggle with dental anxiety. Gentle sedation methods help them relax and feel better about the treatment experience. Lastly, pediatric sedation dentistry is a useful tool when working with special needs children. The anesthesia prevents spontaneous or erratic movements and helps guide cooperative behavior.
Pediatric Sedation Dentistry in Gilbert, AZ
At Islands Pediatric Dentistry we offer three types of sedation: Nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and pediatric general anesthesia.
- Laughing Gas: Dr. Rez may recommend nitrous oxide in Gilbert (“laughing gas”) for nervous or overly anxious children. The mixture of nitrous and oxygen is delivered through a facial mask, that gets placed over a child’s nose. Since laughing gas is always combined with oxygen kids can breathe comfortably in through the nose and out the mouth. Nitrous takes effect quickly and wears off instantly. It can also be combined with other sedatives.
- Oral Conscious Sedation: For kids with high anxiety, who are uncooperative or with poor muscle control, we offer oral conscious sedation (twilight sedation) options. Depending on your child’s needs, tablets, pills or liquids may be given to make your child feel drowsy. Dr. Rez will discuss all the details before treatment.
- Pediatric General Anesthesia: Very young children with special needs, severe anxiety or those in need of extensive dental repairs may be treated with general anesthesia. This management technique involves medications that allow patients to sleep during dental procedures. Pediatric general anesthesia is administered by an anesthesiologist, while Dr. Rez completes the dental work.
